Broadcast Journalism

Video is the most powerful narrative medium ever devised. It enables us to share stories that have not before been heard or known. It enables us to tell wonderful stories that we can see. Stories which can connect us to those we'd never previously meet. Video takes us places. Let's go somewhere!

In the Summer of 2023, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) on the inception of the "Be There" campaign—an innovative initiative committed to shaping the future of broadcasting in Michigan. Playing an integral role in crafting the campaign's narrative, we worked closely with local broadcasters to showcase the expanding landscape of broadcasting and the myriad opportunities it presents within the great State of Michigan. "Be There" serves as a rallying call, urging Michiganders to not only tune in but also actively engage and participate in the dynamic world of broadcasting, a force that significantly influences and shapes our communities. It was a rewarding experience contributing to a campaign that champions the rich tapestry of Michigan's broadcasting future.

Feature Stories

We can communicate stories to audiences all across the world thanks to videos. While these feature pieces are often longer in length, they intrigue me in so many ways, encapsulating a wide range of emotions and telling a well-rounded story.

The Rise is a tribute to the Northwest High School Boys Tennis Class of 2022. This feature story depicts the rise of the tennis program from the depths of mediocrity to a championship program leaned on the shoulders of this special class of seniors. Placing First Place in the state for sports feature (MIPA) in 2022 & Honorable Mention sports feature (MAB) in 2021.

Battle for the Boot is a crosstown high school hockey rivalry that is riddled with hatred. This in-depth feature explores the rivalry's underlying dynamics and demonstrates the fervor with which both teams compete to don the boot and win the city's crown. Placing Second Place in the state for sports feature (MIPA) in 2022.

Sports Promotions

Quick, hype-filled, and easy to engage. These are some of my favorite video styles. These films certainly get the crowd hyped before a big game. From the flashing lights and smoke to the game footage featured, they use many different techniques to engage the audience.

Get hyped! Before every home men's basketball game at Spring Arbor University, this Fall 2023 Spring Arbor Men's Basketball Intro video is shown on the jumbotron. This video has voiceover from Xavier Prather, Big Brother 2021 Winner & SAU Graduate Class of 2017.

Get hyped! Before every home men's basketball game at Spring Arbor University, this 2022-23 Spring Arbor Men's Basketball Intro video is shown on the jumbotron. This video was one of my favorites since it used methods like LED backdrop lighting, smoke, and the inclusion of game footage.

Directing

I have been director of my high schools's broadcasting program for two years. I really appreciate my role as a director on the program. While it does come with pressure to perform at my highest ability,  I enjoy being someone my less experienced peers can come to and assist them in improving their skills in journalism.

Here are two Mountie Nation Station shows that I have been proud to direct

Our school looks forward to the weekly Mountie Nation Station broadcast every Friday. I was entrusted with directing this Halloween episode for our student body and community to enjoy in the fall of 2021. Hope you enjoy this spooky episode of Mountie Nation Station

Every school year, our broadcasting program creates a year-end homage that summarizes the incredible year while looking ahead to the new academic year. I was entrusted with directing this broadcast, and I am really pleased with the results.

Community Engagement

During Covid's peak, I used my reach and sought to use videos to connect others who couldn't connect. Community engagement during times of separation, in my opinion, is critical to maintain our world's connectedness.

Dear Covid... a letter written from a student's point of view to the awful pandemic that we were currently going through. This film was truly my most widespread video being acknowledged by several groups in my community and served as a means of connecting others around me during these tough times for all.

What began as a joke designed to demonstrate the importance of masks during the pandemic, Not-So-Wild West suddenly became a success. This humorous short film won First Place (MIPA) in the state for humor in 2021.

On-Air

Despite the fact that I have created several feature films in which I am not seen, I enjoy being on camera. When people think of broadcasting, they immediately think of on-air talent. I recall fantasizing of working at the TV news desk. This has quickly become a reality for me:)

Since my time at Spring Arbor, On-Air Commentary has evolved into a significant passion of mine. Explore this reel showcasing my proficiency in color commentary and play-by-play narration while directing for both volleyball and basketball. Immerse yourself in the dynamic world of sports broadcasting

I was able to anchor this weekly edition of Mountie Nation Station. We used this for our overall display for a number of contests, including MIPA. I hope you enjoy it!
